VTC TPE Group develop innovative water swellable TPE

Vita Thermoplastic Polymers (VTP), the UK division of the VTC TPE Group, has developed an innovative, water swellable TPE compound, which expands in aqueous solutions from PH 7 to 12 and has seen impressive utilisation within the construction industry.

A range of formulations of the SEBS compound have been developed to offer swell rates from 300 to 800% when immersed in water. When there is no longer water present the compound shrinks back to its original state, a process of expansion and contraction that can be repeated an unlimited number of times.

The new compound has solid structural integrity, unlike many of the equivalent clay based products which can erode and shatter over time. Compounded in any colour, the water swellable TPE is 100% recyclable and can be processed using conventional thermoplastic fabricating methods, including extrusion and injection moulding. The compound is also available in anti-microbial versions.

Andy Wilson, the Technical Manager responsible for the development, commented “We had a lot of material properties to consider when developing this compound; we needed to get the chemistry right to compensate for the differing swell rates we encountered with cross-sectional and surface area variances. We have now developed the technology so this can be precisely controlled. We have also formulated the range to offer compounds for alkaline and saline environments.”

Currently, this compound is being used in the construction industry where it is encapsulated in concrete and used in damp coursing to prevent the ingress of water; it will be interesting to see whether it also has applications for more consumer-led products.

ENDS

VTC TPE Group have developed an innovative hydrophilic TPE that swells to eight times its original volume when immersed in water.
